Hi Bill,
Your performance on Thursday in Marin was amazing.
You've got so much energy and your humor is so intelligent. It was a pleasure
to watch you and talk to you after the show. I particularly liked the
joke about the rat and cat -- "watch a self correcting universe."
Enjoy your time in San Francisco and if you are as good at Salsa as you
are at making people laugh, I would love to witness that performance as
well.
All the best,
L.

Mr Santiago:
I enjoyed the "intelligent design" essay in Mother Jones online.
It's
fun to see "trompe l’oeil" used once in a while. It works
better in
print than in conversation, even more so in Knoxville.
It's strange to me that people don't realize evolution IS "intelligent
design." I mean, sorta. I'm sorta stuck on "intelligent design"
being
redundant, but that's the pedagogue in me.
I keep hoping that God will speak to me some day and he will sound
like Titus Moody. Or Jack Gifford, maybe.
The other person cc'd here is a local gadfly who tipped her friends off
to this beautiful essay.
Thanks,
Jack

Touché! I have not laughed so hard in a very
long, long time. I really need a rise beyond the daily drivel of a species
that didn't just invent the concept of the Peter Principle (as observed
by Dr. L. J. Peter) but gave business a free hand in both the control
and formation of our contemporary socio-cultural values. My favorite explication
of of this principle can be found at http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/PETERPR.html.
Thanks for the laugh

Just
wanted to say congratulations on your career…I met you briefly at
the Victoria Theater a few years ago when you did a set for the Latin
Kings of Comedy movie…I was the MC…That was my third time
ever on stage as a “comic” and well, you witnessed it, so
I won’t go into it…I will say that since I’ve gotten
back into it (the Victoria was my third and last gig for a while—my
wife and I just had a baby and it wasn’t possible for me to put
the time into comedy during the pregnancy etc., etc.), I do the open mic.
at Pepperbelly’s in Fairfield, CA (where I live) every Wenesday,
and you’ll be glad to know that I have worked my way up to having
a solid 4-minute routine…little by little, right?
Aaaaanyway, as a Latino I’m very proud of you, and as an aspiring
comic I’m inspired by your accomplishments. Good job, Bill. Keep
it up!
Victor

Bill
Santiago - just more naturally funny - intellectual, witty - drew experience
from real life and also had a sort of comic physical presence - shyness
at first was pretty apparent but suited him - he got more comfortable
and took cues from the audience. i thought it seemed pretty inherent to
his performance - the best tonight by far.

Dear
Mr. Santiago,
I saw you when you opened up for Lewis Black a few years ago in Minneapolis
and you were great. I am part of the University of Maryland's humor newspaper,
the Maryland Cow Nipple, and one of our objectives next year is to bring
a comedian to campus. We are located just outside of DC. I was wondering
if you could send me some information about your schedule for the late
summer and fall and about your pricing for shows. We are working on our
budget and need an idea of how much we would need to save to bring a comedian
to campus.
Thank
you.

Hi Bill,
I saw you perform at Mother Jone's "State of the Union" in New
York City last year at Town Hall. I've been dying to see another performance
(I've never seen a comedian who could make me laugh so much!), but I'm
having a difficult time finding a calendar of bookings.
Do you have one online anywhere? Is there a way I can access one? I really
love your work and appreciate your humor!
Thanks!!

Subject: A Mother Jones event in February - would you be available?
Dear
Bill,
I hope the holiday season is treating you well! All of us at Mother Jones
were thrilled you were able to participate in the State of the Union Comedy
event in New York last September. It was a rousing success and you were,
among the audience and the staff, one of the show highlights.
I'm writing today to see if you would be available to be our 'guest of
honor' at an upcoming event for Mother Jones here in San Francisco. Each
year, as a special thank you to our major supporters we throw a donor
recognition party. It's an intimate affair-usually 40-60 people-that gives
our donors an opportunity to mingle with staff, our board of directors,
as well as each other.
When discussing the event this year your name came up immediately. With
the often serious tone of our magazine and coming out of a disappointing
election year we couldn't think of a better antidote than humor. We would
be honored to have you join us for this special event if your schedule
permits.
Thank you for your time and consideration!
Sincerely,
Steve Katz

"My only ambivalence about Bush," Bill Santiago mused at the
Herbst "Going Away Party," "is whether I should take him
out myself." Pause, accompanied by cautious laughter. "To lunch,
I mean," he clarified. "and talk some damn sense into the boy."
The place erupted. By both airing and deflating his own hostility, Santiago
had momentarily opened and cleansed the audience's dark spirit.”

“At Sunday's matinee, Bill Santiago ("born in New York, like
most Puerto Ricans") did 20 minutes of quick, cogent satire about
the president ("a man who could drown in a shallow think tank")
and his administration of "born-again Christians from the oil industry"
(people who "don't believe in evolution and made all their money
in fossil fuels")… Santiago proved political satire is alive
in America.”

Hola
Bill,
I wanted to let you know that I am the newly elected president of the
Bill Santiago Fan Club - San Francisco Chapter. The three of us in the
club watched your performance on Comedy Central this past Friday night
and decided we needed to unite ourselves in order to promote you and enlighten
our gente with you as our leader!!
Then,
last Saturday night, I went to see my friend Jacqueline Rago perform at
La Peña in Berkeley, and walking out I picked-up a calendar of
events for Jan/Feb 2004. Noting that you will be there on 2/6, I immediately
informed the other club members and we will be bringing in many more future
fan club members in February. We're even talking about making buttons.
On
behalf of myself and the club, te deseamos unas fiestas felices y muchas
bendiciones en 2004.
xo,

Bill
came to us as part of a program curated by and featuring Culture Clash.
He absolutely won over our audience in a very tough "house"
and had them right where any politically oriented comedic performer would
want an audience - right in the center of his hand. (He worked on a stage
that is separated from the audience by 40 feet of water and he still communicated
with the crowd as if he were in an intimate coffee house. We were amazed.)
His material was timely, topical and intelligent. The audience was very
responsive and we are seriously interested in bringing him back - quite
possibly next year as a lead in to the fall elections. That night our
audience was a mix of folks of different generations and different ethnic
backgrounds. In spite of the edgy quality of his work, we did not get
any negative reactions and heard only positive reactions during his routine
and from people afterward.
